Circularity Technologies

Research activities

The Research Laboratory Circularity Technologies - Sustainable renovation pathways for the built environment, in terms of environmental efficiency and innovation serves as an interdisciplinary hub dedicated to exploring design strategies for the redevelopment, reuse, and enhancement of abandoned or decommissioned building stock. Aligned with the principles of circular economy and urban resilience, its activities span multiple intervention scales—from territorial to construction detail—applying innovative methodologies for the environmental and energy regeneration of the built environment.

The Laboratory's activities are developed across two intervention scales:

  • Territorial scale: Analyzing settlement complexes and degraded urban fabrics to develop redevelopment models that integrate sustainability and climate adaptability. Interventions include the conversion of disused areas, regeneration of historic centers, and reactivation of obsolete construction systems, with particular attention to the symbiosis between context and local resources.
  • Building scale: Focusing on the technological design of building envelopes, experimenting with solutions based on natural and recycled materials. Studies delve into innovative dry construction systems, performance stratifications, and environmental certification protocols, aiming to optimize energy performance and life cycle impact.

The Laboratory's activities are structured along five main directions:

  1. Built environment recovery and sustainability
  2. Urban regeneration and reuse
  3. Abandonment and environmental enhancement
  4. Building envelope
  5. Circular materials

Research projects, conducted down to the technological detail, combine physical prototyping and performance simulations, validating solutions replicable in diverse contexts. Collaborations with companies and international centers strengthen technology transfer, positioning the Laboratory as a reference point for the circular transition in the AEC (Architecture, Engineering, and Construction) sector.
