Fabio Bacchini (1971) is Associate Professor of Epistemology at the Faculty of Architecture in Alghero, Sassari University, where he is working on the semiotic, epistemiological and methodological foundations of the project, and where he runs the Applied Epistemology Laboratory. He has taught Bioethics and Philosophy of Science at the Faculty of Sociology, “La Sapienza” University, Rome (1997-2001); Sociology at the Faculty of Medicine & Surgery at “La Sapienza” University, Rome (2000-2001); Sociology at the Link Campus – University of Malta in Rome (2001). He has worked at the Department of Philosophy, “La Sapienza” University, Rome (1997-2001) and the Department of Philosophy, Roma Tre University, Rome (2001-2004).

He studied at the EHESS and the CREA in Paris (1993-1995), obtained his degree in Philosophy at “La Sapienza” University, Rome with the grade 110/110 + Honours (1996), specialised in Bioethics at the same university (1999) and obtained his Ph.D. in Literature and Communication at Siena University (2001). He organised the international congresses Bioethics: Justice Issues (Rome, 18-19 January 2000); Self and Other in Social Neuroscience and Philosophy of Mind (Alghero, 26-28 October 2008); The Social Construction of the Self (Alghero, 28-29 September 2009); and the International Summer School in Neuroscience and Philosophy of Mind: The Social Self (Alghero, 20-27 September 2009). He took part in the European research projects Science, Fiction and Science Fiction. The role of literature in public debates on medical ethical issues and in the medical education, EC Quality of Life Programme (2002-2005; coordinator Prof. Inez De Beaufort, Erasmus Medical College, Rotterdam); Eureca, European project on delimiting the research concept and the research activities (2004-2007; coordinator Prof. John Harris, School of Law, University of Manchester) and Eurobese, Ethics and the Obesity and Overweight Epidemic: Image, Culture, Technologies and Interventions, European project on obesity and the ethics of interventions (2005-2009; coordinator Prof. Inez De Beaufort, Erasmus Medical College, Rotterdam).

He writes for L’Unità and La Rivista dei Libri. He has published La Mente Esiste (The Mind Exists) (Rome, Meltemi, 2000) on the body-mind problem; Il Diritto di Non Esistere (The Right Not to Exist) (Milan, McGraw-Hill, 2002) on the philosophical aspects of wrongful life suits; Persone Potenziali e Libertà (Potential Persons and Freedom) (Milan, Baldini Castoldi Dalai, 2006) on the moral statute of the embryo, eugenics and reproductive biotechnologies. He is a co-editor of Che Cos’è l’Amor (What is Love) (Milano, Baldini Castoldi Dalai, 2003), an anthology of theoretical essays on love. In his research articles he has dealt with philosophy of the mind, free will, semiotics, bioethics, the ethics of human reproduction and the rationality of moral argumentation.
