Background
The emergence of digital technology, and its impact on media evolution have helped to bring back the ancient and noble discipline of Animation to a preminent position in the field of communication and in the visual arts.

As a result of the success of some recent feature productions, the field of 3D computer animation has proved its technical excellence - a true peek in contemporary innovation - as well as being an extraordinary field of creative and artistic experimentation, yet at the same time a robust economic venture.
Nevertheless it is if we consider it in a new light, as a whole, that the language of animation emerges as a brand new player in the arena of human communication. Thanks to the strenght of its universal language, capable to bridge uniquely linguistic, cultural, and age boundaries, the world of animation is experiencing a growth and repositioning within the global scenario of media and communication,

Today animation is used far beyond the more obvious domains of activity, such as artistic experimentation, entertainment, scientific visualization, education, advertising, making a new space for itself in emerging areas such as design communication, communication on the web, e-learning, interface design support, technical documentation and manuals, process simulation.
All this raises new questions on the role that the languages of animation can play in the communication challenges of a society of increasing complexity, leading actors in the field to reconsider it in a broader and more inter-disciplinary perspective, where the very design issue of combining artistic and creative demands with the potential of technology grows into something radically new.

The Alghero meeting on the 'languages of animation' brings togheter a selected group of speakers from the worlds of professional practice, education and research, in order to start exchanging points of views and to discuss future perspectives.

The meeting is part of a series of events connected with the start of a new course of study in Industrial Design at Alghero's the School of Architecture, which-among other things-will be focused on animation, computer graphics, interaction design and new Media, and aims to highlight how this new initiative represents for the region of Sardinia a great cultural, technological and economical opportunity.
