Applications for admission to the "laurea magistrale" ( LM4), equivalent to the Master of Science in Architecture, of the Department of Architecture, Design and Urban Planning of the University of Sassari, are open for acceptance.
- Application deadline for admission test: 2 October 2023
- Interview and language test: 12 October 2023 at 9:30 am on Google Meet Platform.
For the Academic Year 2023/2024 the number of positions available is set as follows:
- 40 available spots reserved for EU and non-EU citizens as per art. 26 L. 189/2002
- 10 available spots reserved for EU citizens residing abroad (5 of which are reserved for Chinese citizens)

The laurea magistrale degree program completes academic training for architects equipped to work on the widest range of complex design processes. The magistrale degree broadens the competence students already gained in the preceding three-year triennale program and provides them with specialized know-how in architectural, urban and territorial design through an interdisciplinary, multi-scale approach. It also provides knowledge of cultural, aesthetic, ecological social, managerial, distributional, functional, structural, technical-construction related, executive, normative and economic aspects of architectural design.
A DEGREE FOCUSED ON IN-DEPTH EXPLORATION OF COMPLEX DESIGN TOPICS
The Degree Program in Architecture offered by the University of Sassari focuses on in-depth exploration of complex design topics on various scales: urban, territorial and architectural. It was designed to complete professional training for future employment in the field. Students can enrich their skills and knowledge through interdisciplinary design experiences which delve into the complexity of issues affecting society today.
A DEGREE PROGRAM FOCUSED ON THE ENVIRONMENT AND CULTURAL/HISTORICAL HERITAGE
The aim of the program is to train Architects capable of working with competence, awareness and autonomy within the complex variables affecting the environment and cultural/historical legacies with an approach centered on durability and sustainability. Specifically, coursework addresses design of natural and cultural landscapes with the aim of creating models of individual and social dwelling that are sustainable and which give precedence to utilizing and reclaiming existing resources rather than consuming more territory.
A DEGREE PROGRAM THAT PROMOTES INNOVATION AND EXPERIMENTATION
The academic program favors the development of future professionals who are multi-faceted and capable of applying acquired knowledge to novel situations- an ability that is not constrained by rigid, pre-conceived notions but rather depends upon developing an explorative methodology- one of the key elements of the program. Graduates are capable of applying their technical, scientific, historical and critical know-how in novel situations which require experimenting with innovative design solutions.

A PROGRAM THAT DELVES INTO KEY CONTEMPORARY ISSUES IN THE PROFESSIONAL WORLD
The degree program allows students to gain skills and experience in the field of architectural design while learning about key current matters in contemporary society. With regard to the world of employment, which is constantly changing, the School in Alghero gives students the opportunity to explore in-depth the most interesting and important contemporary issues, allowing them to gain awareness of and experience in a range of specific sectors, such as climate change, risk assessment, migration, safeguarding environmental, landscape, and historical-cultural heritage, favoring people’s well-being and health, and sustainability. Being able to personalize their academic course helps students begin to define their professional identity.
A DEGREE PROGRAM THAT ADDRESSES THE VARIOUS ASPECTS OF ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN
The degree program considers the new demands of the professional world, which calls for competent players who understand how to apply their competence to problematic issues in constant flux. For this reason, the program endeavors to boost students’ historical-critical understanding as well as their capacity to apply techniques and methods to seek the right solutions for the varied and complex elements involved in design and research.
The various complexities of architectural design
During the first part of the program, students experience that introduce them to the various complexities of architectural deisgn. This first phase is thus focused on current issues regarding the needs of contemporary society and the changes it is undergoing; environmental, economic and social sustainability; reclaiming and reuse of existing building resources; urban regeneration; the new needs arising from changing lifestyles and forms of economy; integrated systems for the utilization, communication and management of cultural legacy; technological innovation, and the efficient use of resources.
Aspects of research in Architecture
During the final part of the program, students have an opportunity to prepare themselves for the professional world, which is constantly and unpredictably evolving. They develop the cultural, transversal and interdisciplinary competence in both traditional building endeavors on all scales and more innovative or experimental design activities.
In this phase, students will have a chance to apply their design skills in more contexts, tailoring their training and choosing from a wide array of learning modules focused on up-and-coming issues in contemporary architectural design, thereby beginning to build a more personalized professional identity.
This teaching and research offer – which is updated, adjusted and enriched each year based on new opportunities that arise or can be foreseen- favors the multidimensional, transversal and interdisciplinary training needed to operate in the rapidly changing job market.
Career opportunities for Architects
The degree program comes to an end with an immersion in the professional world and in specialized topics through internship and a final thesis. In the latter, students can further develop a chosen aspect of what they have learned thus far and better define their professional interests by selecting a specific final laboratory project/thesis from those offered.
ADMISSIONS
To apply for the Laurea Magistrale in Architecture, applicants must:
- Register on Self Studenti Uniss;
- Submit an online application starting from 03/07/2023 and no later than 11:59 pm on 2/10/2023.
To submit the application, after logging in on Self Studenti Uniss https://uniss.esse3.cineca.it/Home.do), go to ”segreteria” > ”concorsi di ammissione” > select the competition for admission to Laurea Magistrale in Architettura (classe di laurea LM4) and "Ammissione" follow the instructions.
A commission will assess the applications received and prepare a ranking based on the degree mark, the curriculum of studies (with exams taken)
any international experience, portfolio and an online interview in which it will also be verified that the candidate is able to use fluently at least one language of the European Union in addition to Italian.

Candidate placed in the list of successful candidates must proceed to enrolment.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
Program graduates may become self-employed or work in group firms in the field of architectural design and the production of nuilding processes and works. They may also work in public or private research and development companies, local bodies or public territorial governance offices.
Graduates can pursue professional license in the following sectors: Agronomy, Forestry, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Planning, Landscape Planning, Land-use Planning.
Specifically- after passing the State exam, which grants professional license and registration with the Board of Architects, Planners, Landscape architects and Conservationists – section A- professional practice may involve:
- Applied research in architecture or engineering;
- Designing of building and civil works and engaging in the connected design process and procedures;
- Designing complex restorations of architectonic resources;
- Coordinating procedures aimed at surveying, representing, designing and overseeing construction and maintenance of building works, utilities and security-related systems;
- Performing cost-analyses and economic assessments of building works.
The laurea magistrale is a prerequisite for level II university Master’s and doctoral research programs. Finally, graduates can apply for ranking to obtain teaching positions in secondary schools in accordance with current norms.
