Drawing on my recently-published book Animal Architecture: Beasts, Buildings and Us (Reaktion, 2023), this talk considers how and why architects should be more open to more-than-human life in both conceiving and constructing the built environment. Weaving a narrative that draws together theory and practice, I argue that animals have their own distinctive kind of agency in the world, whether as beings that build for themselves, ones that choose to inhabit our buildings, or others that affect our imaginations and fictions.
Paul Dobraszczyk is a lecturer in the history and theory of architecture at the Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London. He is the author of many books, including Botanical Architecture (Reaktion, forthcoming in 2024), Animal Architecture (Reaktion, 2023), and Architecture and Anarchism (Paul Holberton, 2021). He’s also a photographer and artist and built the website www.stonesofmanchester.com in 2018. He blogs at www.ragpickinghistory.co.uk.
